Start Creative

A Shop That Makes a Difference

There’s something very special about the products we make at Start Creative. Everything you can buy or hire from us comes with its own individual stamp – behind each product lies a story, and the hands that made it belong to someone with a fiercely creative talent borne out of facing some difficult social challenges. The quality speaks for itself. With retail partners like John Lewis, The Lowry and the National Football Museum stocking our wares, you can trust that what we produce is first rate.

Start Creative is the commercial arm of Start in Salford. The people who work with us are highly trained individuals, all of whom benefit in some way from the creative process that goes into making our products. What’s more, every penny we make goes back into the charity to help us offer more people the chance to grow and shine, and learn new skills.

Our products are made to the highest standards, using a blend of traditional skills with modern techniques and equipment. All materials are ethically sourced from within Greater Manchester, so you can be sure each product benefits the local community and is environmentally sound.

Every product is exquisitely handcrafted, and our Creative Manager oversees all our unique designs and quality assurance. In addition, staff training is delivered by some of the finest craft workers in the region.

The volunteers at Start Creative are very much part of a team and work in all aspects of the business, from sales and customer service to manufacture, packaging and stock control. It's an important part of their journey to recovery and proven to make a huge difference – improving their wellbeing, raising confidence and building self-esteem.

You can buy our products online, or at one of the many craft fares and exhibitions we attend. We also take on bespoke commissions, so if you prefer something that suits your individual taste, we can work from your brief and deliver it to your satisfaction.

As well as our range of high quality products, we offer classes and events for people of all ages within the community. So be sure to get involved – either as a member or a participant – and you’ll see just how beneficial our social enterprise can be to your and other people’s well being.
